2026 season
🚜 Hayrides
855 farms across 9 states, and 563 with 2026 season dates posted by the farm.
A hayride is a slow ride around the farm on an open wagon lined with straw or hay bales, usually pulled by a tractor and occasionally by horses. For young kids it is often the highlight of the day: a bumpy, breezy ride out to the pumpkin patch or through the fields and back. Hayrides are almost always part of a bigger farm visit: of the 855 farms with hayrides in our directory, 797 have a pumpkin patch and 558 have a corn maze, so the ride is often how you get out to the fun.

When to go in 2026
Most hayrides open around Sep 19 and close around Oct 31. 87% of the closing dates farms have posted are on or before November 1, so don't leave it too late. Farms in Michigan tend to open first (around Sep 15), and those in California and Texas last (around Sep 26). Hoping for a quieter weekday trip? Of the 642 farms that publish their fall hours, 182 (28%) are closed Monday through Thursday, so check the farm's hours before you go. These figures come from the 2026 dates 563 of the 855 farms have posted themselves, and update as more farms post theirs.
What parents usually want to know
Is a hayride okay for toddlers and babies?
Yes. Daytime hayrides are gentle and slow, and little kids usually love them. Hold babies and toddlers on your lap, sit toward the middle of the wagon, and keep hands and feet inside. Strollers generally can't ride on the wagon, so plan to fold it or leave it in the car and bring a carrier instead.
How long is the ride?
It varies by farm. Some rides are a short loop, and others take you out to a pumpkin field and wait while you pick, then bring you back. The farm's page usually describes the route. On busy weekends, allow extra time for the line before you board.
Is the hayride included in admission?
Farms do it both ways: some include the hayride with admission, others sell ride tickets separately, and some include a pumpkin with the ride. Prices vary a lot, so check the farm's own page, and bring some cash in case a smaller farm takes cash only.
What about haunted hayrides?
Some farms run haunted hayrides after dark on selected weekends, and 128 of the hayride farms in our directory also list a haunted attraction. These are separate, scarier events meant for teens and adults, not the daytime ride your little ones will enjoy. If you are bringing young kids, ride in daylight.
Anything to know about allergies or the weather?
Hay and straw can be dusty, so if someone in the family has allergies or asthma, bring their medicine along. Wagons are open to the weather, so dress in layers, and note that some farms pause rides in heavy rain or lightning.
What should we wear and bring?
Layers for a breezy ride, pants rather than shorts (straw is scratchy), and closed-toe shoes for walking the fields afterward. Some farms don't allow outside food or dogs, so check before you pack a picnic or bring the family pet.
When is it least crowded?
Weekend afternoons in October have the longest lines, especially on the weekends before Halloween. A weekend morning is usually calmer and a weekday quieter still. Many farms are closed early in the week, though, and some run hayrides on weekends only, so check the hours on the farm's page first.

How these dates are checked
Every season date on this page was read off the farm's own website, Facebook page or ticket store, then checked against this year's calendar. A page still advertising last fall's dates is rejected rather than republished. Farms with no date yet simply have not posted one; more do as the season nears. How we verify season dates →
